Wellness Day

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOn January 26, the Sisters of Notre Dame in California attended Wellness Day – a day to focus on ways to maintain and improve health outcomes for all sisters. The day began with Sr. Mary Luellen Boeglin sharing information on the many ways in which Sisters of Notre Dame throughout the world are ministering in health care settings, and how that ministry relates to the SND charism. Following that introduction, the sisters enjoyed presentations aimed at personal health.

During the sessions, Sarah Carvaines, Clinical Dietician and RD, spoke on Women and Nutrition, offering a decade by decade guide to healthy eating. Dr. Ann Gilbert, SND Associate and Clinical Therapist, spoke about aging gracefully, and the mental health challenges that we face as we age. Sandy Marquez, RN, offered the sisters a guided tour to health sites on the internet, and demonstrated how to evaluate information found on-line. And Sr. Mary Judeen Julier, and Sr. Mary Jolisa Lazaro gave the sisters ideas for gentle physical exercises and meditation techniques that can be used throughout the day to help boost energy and improve mental clarity.

The sisters are grateful to the sisters and friends who took the time to create presentations for Wellness Day. It is through attention to our own physical and mental health needs that we find the strength to minister to others.

From December 16-24 the sound of chant rings out from every Notre Dame Convent here in our California Province. Echoing the yearning of Israel for the Savior, the Christmas Novena gives voice for our own longing for the presence of God in our lives and in our world. Would you like to join us in this time-honored custom of singing the Christmas novena? Call your local convent of the Sisters of Notre Dame for times. In the midst of all our preparations for Christmas, it’s a lovely way to keep ourselves grounded in what the season is really all about!

halloween-253x300We at Providence House love Halloween! The wonderful smell of candles burning in the pumpkins, the crisp, breezy evening spent at a neighbors’ party or passing out candy to all the ghosts, goblins and chili peppers who come calling at our front door. Yes, indeed, Halloween is a cherished holiday at the convent. I remember my first one spent at the “Big House”, our province convent. I was surprised to see all the sisters dressed up in various costumes. I had no idea nuns would get so into the holiday! I remember Sister Mary Immaculette dressed as a hula girl, she even had a flower in her hair! There were games and candy, music and laughter. It was touchingly innocent, full of a sweet, simple joy that was so very much in touch with the child that is in us all.

I found a wonderful post over at the site First Things that speaks about the full holiday of Hallowmas, it’s a wonderful read full of symbolism and insight. Check it out and have a safe, joyful Halloween!
