Notre Dame Academy (NDA) in West Los Angeles, California, honors one alumna and one graduating senior each year with the Sister Mary Aloysia Service in Education Award, created in 2002. The award is given to “A woman of faith who exemplifies a spirit of service and cooperation and demonstrates a commitment to serve the Church through education,” within the NDA community. Alumna Sister Antoinette Marie Moon will accept her award on December 14th at a Christmas brunch for alumnae.
Sister graduated from NDA in 1963 and became a Sister of Notre Dame that same year. She began teaching fifth grade at NDA in 1967 and served on the school board from 1999 to 2005.
“I love to guide students to capture or continue a relationship with the world of knowledge,” said Sister Antoinette Marie, whose favorite subjects are religion and history.
She carries the spirit of Sister Mary Aloysia with her daily. In 2000, she traveled to Rome with other sisters to study Sister Maria Aloysia’s life and her role in founding the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1850. Afterward, Sister Antoinette Marie felt inspired to write a Litany honoring the foundress. She also created a retreat based on Sister Maria Aloysia’s spirituality with the help of three other sisters.
